Rules and Regulations: (Subject to Revision)

  • The Apple Blossom Spelling Bee will be an oral competition with eliminations on a “miss and out” basis.
  • Words will be selected from a list prepared by the Apple Blossom Spelling Bee Word Committee.  Spellings, pronunciations and definitions will be taken from a Canadian dictionary and there will be no words with capital letters.
  • All spellers competing in the competition will be given a number to determine their spelling order.  The numbers will be randomly drawn from a hat.  Spellers will wear name tags for identification.
  • Spellers will be seated in numerical order facing the Pronouncer and the audience.
  • A practice round will be conducted prior to the start of the competition to familiarize spellers with the procedure.  No speller will be eliminated in this round and the words used during this round will not be used again.
  • Starting with speller number one, each speller will be called in turn to the front of the group and the Pronouncer will read the word they are to spell.  The word will be repeated. The speller will then be asked to spell the word.
  • The speller may ask for the word to be pronounced again.  The speller may ask the Pronouncer to define the word and/or use of the word in a sentence. When two words sound the same and have different meanings, it is the responsibility of the speller to ask for a definition.
  • The recommended procedure for the competition is as follows:  The speller should repeat the word, spell it, and then say the word again when finished to indicate that they are finished spelling. Failure to pronounce the word will not result in elimination.  The correct spelling of the word will then be given by the Pronouncer.  A bell will sound if the speller is incorrect and the contestant is eliminated and will join the audience at the end of the round. If no bell is sounded, the speller is correct and returns to his or her seat. A new word of equal difficulty will be given to the next contestant.
  • The Judges will disqualify any speller who fails to begins spelling a word within 30 seconds of being given the word or its definition or if the speller who is spelling the word is inaudible to the Judges.
  • If the speller has started to spell a word, he/she may stop and start over and can change the letters or their sequence from those first used by the speller unless the word has been spelled completely.
  • The competition will be conducted in rounds, beginning with the junior contestants.  A speller will be given one word per round. Each speller remaining at the end of a round will progress to the next round. In any round where all spellers incorrectly spell a word, the round will begin again and all will remain in that round. This will be done until two spellers remain.
  • The two final spellers will be given words until one spells a word incorrectly.  The other speller will then be given a chance to spell the word that the first speller has misspelled.  If he or she spells it right, he/she will be given one more word.  If he/she spells it right, he/she is declared the winner.  If he/she spells the second word wrong, then both spellers are still in the competition and the process continues.
  • If there is only one contestant for a category, he or she will have the option of
withdrawing or competing in the next higher category.
  • Any question relating to the procedures or the spelling of a word must be referred to the judges immediately. The Judges are in complete control of the competition and their decision shall be final on all questions.
